These terms apply to Solander, the macOS document redaction app sold through this website, and to nothing else Quiet Signals Lab publishes. A Solander licence is bought once and covers every future version.

There are two contracts, and it is worth being plain about which is which.
You buy from Paddle. Paddle.com Market Ltd is the reseller and merchant of record for the sale. Your purchase contract is with Paddle: they take the payment, handle VAT, issue your invoice, and act as the seller of the product to you. Paddle’s Buyer Terms govern that sale.
The licence to use the software comes from us. These terms govern that licence, which is granted by Quiet Signals Lab as the supplier and rights holder of Solander. So Paddle decides how the sale and the payment work; these terms decide what you may do with the software.
A licence to use Solander. A Solander licence covers one person, on as many of their own Macs as they use — a laptop and a desktop are one licence, not two. It does not cover a colleague.
A licence is bought once and has no expiry date of its own. It includes every version of Solander released after it, at no further cost: there is no subscription and nothing to renew.
Your licence file is signed by us, and Solander verifies that signature on your Mac against a key built into the app. Separately, a helper process that runs alongside the app — not the app that opens your documents, which has no network access at all — confirms with us about once a week that the purchase behind your licence still stands. It sends your licence ID, the app version and a random install ID. It does not send, and cannot send, anything about your documents.
If that check cannot reach us, the licensed features keep working for a grace period of 30 days after the last successful check. A newly installed licence works for 60 days before a first check is needed. If the grace period runs out, the licensed features pause until the next successful check; they are not deleted, and nothing you have made stops working.
For a Mac that is never allowed on a network, there is offline activation: the app shows a request code, you enter it on a web page from another device, and enter the signed response code back into the app. A first activation lasts 15 days and each renewal lasts 90, and renewal is the same exchange again.
A licence ends if the purchase is refunded or charged back. When that happens we deactivate it, and the licensed features stop working — normally within a week, and within 30 days at most. Free mode is unaffected and remains available to you with no time limit. This is set out on the Refunds page.
We may count how many separate installations one licence is running on, in order to see a licence being shared well beyond what was bought; we do not cap the number of Macs you personally use, and we do not tie a licence to particular hardware. What we store, and for how long, is in the privacy notice.
Setting your Mac’s clock backwards to extend a time-limited activation does not work, and Solander will pause the licensed features if it detects it. Putting the clock right, or letting one check succeed, restores them.
Solander can be downloaded and used without payment, on one document at a time, with no time limit and no account. Free mode needs no licence, is not affected by any licence check, and keeps working if a licence is deactivated for any reason.
Free mode is provided as it is, with no warranty and no support commitment, and may change between versions. Nothing in this paragraph affects your mandatory statutory rights as a consumer.
Deciding what must be removed, and checking that it was, remains yours. Solander is a tool for that work, not a substitute for it, and it is not legal advice. Reports Solander produces are records of what the software did; they are not certifications, and we do not certify any document.
Do not use Solander to conceal information you are legally required to disclose, or to process material you have no right to process. Do not redistribute, resell, or sublicense the software or a licence file, and do not attempt to circumvent the licence check.
Updates are delivered through the app's own updater and are optional. Turning off update checks does not turn off licence confirmation; those are separate, and only update checks are optional. Support is by email at hello@quietsignalslab.com, provided on a reasonable-efforts basis during Dutch business hours.
If you are a consumer: we will supply the updates, including security updates, that are necessary to keep Solander in conformity with the contract, for as long as you may reasonably expect given the type and purpose of the software and the circumstances of the sale. We will tell you about those updates through the app’s updater. If you choose not to install an update we have made available and told you about, we are not responsible for a lack of conformity arising only from that choice. Nothing in these terms limits your statutory rights in respect of conformity or updates.
If you are buying as a business: we do not guarantee that any particular version will remain compatible with future versions of macOS.
The software is provided as it is. To the extent the law allows, Quiet Signals Lab is not liable for indirect or consequential loss, including loss arising from information that was not detected, not redacted, or wrongly redacted. For business buyers, total liability for any claim is limited to what you paid for the licence.
If you are a consumer, the two sentences above do not limit your statutory rights. Solander must be in conformity with the contract, and the exclusion of warranty and the cap on liability do not apply to you to the extent Dutch law does not permit them. Your rights to repair, replacement, a price reduction or termination under Art. 7:50a ff. of the Dutch Civil Code are unaffected.
Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be limited under Dutch law. Nothing here affects your mandatory statutory rights as a consumer, including your right of withdrawal.
Our refund policy is set out on the Refunds page and forms part of these terms. It is 14 days, no reason needed, for purchases made through this website. A refunded or charged-back purchase ends the licence, as described under “How the licence is checked” above.
What we hold and why is set out in the Solander privacy notice. The app itself processes your documents entirely on your Mac and cannot transmit them: it runs in Apple's App Sandbox without the network client entitlement, which you can verify yourself with codesign -d --entitlements - /Applications/Solander.app. The separate helper processes that check for updates and confirm your licence never receive document data.
We may change these terms for future purchases. The terms in force at the time of your purchase continue to apply to that purchase.
These terms are governed by the law of the Netherlands. Disputes are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Amsterdam, except that a consumer may also bring proceedings in the courts of their own country of residence where the law gives them that right.
